Okinawan Granaries

  • Granaries and pillars in each house

In Okinawa, there are three types of granaries for housing crops; the regular raised granary, and the elevated granary and ground granary, both specific to Hateruma Isand. The regular raised granary is contrived to preserve crops by raising the floor to a higher level for better ventilation and less humidity, and also by installing special boards to block rodents. Depending on its size, either four, six or nine round pillars were used to support the floor, which was covered with a hipped roof made of straw or bamboo. Exhibited here are the ones modeled after a six-pillared granary still standing at Kijoka in Ogimi Village, and a nine-pillared granary still in existence at Gabusoka in Nago City. The side walls are made of woven bamboo, widening upward 45–60 degrees. With a ridge beam atop a steep rafter roof, the side walls are hung from the roof by support timbers. The Hateruma granary is modeled after the one that once stood on that island. Its appearance is similar to a residential house, with upright walls and inside pillars.
