  • Noro, the district priestess

A noro was a priestess who oversaw sacred ceremonies and festivals dedicated to good health and harvest in the villages. During the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom, a noro was officially appointed by the Shuri government and granted some land. Every village has several such women, each overseeing divine festivals in various sections of the village. Serving under the noro were male ucchi-gami and female ni-gami who helped her perform her tasks. Modeled after a private house in Moromi, Izena Village, this wooden tile-roof house is built in a Japanese style called nuchija. The room arrangement is almost identical to that of the typical old private houses. The only difference is the noro's dunchi located within the building that enshrines the hi-nu-kan, god of fire.
