House built primarily of bamboo
During the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom from 1737 to 1889, Okinawan houses were built according to specific regulations. The size of the premises and living rooms were determined by social status. In a farming village, the total area of one person’s premises were 265 m², and the housing was limited to two buildings; a 7.2 by 5.4m main building and a 5.4 by 3.6m kitchen. Restrictions were also placed on building materials. Farmers were strictly forbidden to use tile to roof their houses. Built in a style called anaya, this straw-thatched house has a room arrangement modeled after the farmhouse during the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It consists of a main building and kitchen, using smooth logs for the main surrounding pillars. The floor is low, and the straw-thatched roof is supported by small round timbers.
