Plant Characteristics

Akagi or Bischofia javanica is a large, evergreen tree growing to over 25 meters tall, and is found in limestone areas of low-lying lands, or on mountain hills. Thriving in rich, moist soil, Akagi grows on the Okinawan and Sakishima islands, extending to Taiwan, Southern China, India, Malaysia, Polynesia and Australia. The Japanese name originates in the reddish color of the bark and wood. It produces small, jade-colored flowers between February and May. A large 200–300 year-old Akagi tree stands solemnly in the Uchi-Kanagusuku Utaki shrine in Shuri Kanagusuku, Naha-city, Okinawa, and has been designated a national natural treasure.

In the face of sun, yusuki and akaki blossoms
Bloom in vivid white and red hues.
Let us break off a branch for decoration!
