Hirami-lemon, or Citrus depressa is a small evergreen, broad-leafed tree that thrives in well-drained limestone regions between valleys, growing to around 5 meters tall. The fruit ripens from November to February, growing to about 2-3 cm in diameter. There is a wide range of variation in size and taste of the fruit with a total of seven to eight types. The name, too, changes depending on the area of cultivation: it is called Izumi Kugani or Oogimi Kugani depending on the mountain where it is cultivated. The hirami-lemon is found in areas ranging from Amami Oshima Island and the Okinawan islands in the north, to Taiwan in the south. In Okinawa, it is found in the northern part of the main island, Izumi of Honbu-cho, Katsuyama of Nago-city, Yabu and Kijyoka of Oogimi-mura, growing both wild and under cultivation.
