~The Interaction between exotic Ryukyu and Japan~
Since the invasion of the Satsuma Clan which took place in 1609, the Ryukyu Kingdom is said to have gone through a history of hardships. However, the Ryukyuan people survived the hard times, actively interacting with Japan and China to build up its own original culture, which has been built up through the generations and has resulted in the Okinawan culture of today. This exhibition brings this relationship into focus and introduces the Ryukyuan lacquer wares and musical instruments that were presented to the Shogunate Government in Edo, which is now called Tokyo.
The Ryukyu in the Edo Period ~Presented Ryukyuan Instruments~
Ryukyuan envoys to Edo performed gUzagaku,h Chinese style chamber music, at various places including Edo Castle. Here, we present 22 types of musical instruments of Ryukyu that were restored after the instruments that belong to the Tokugawa Clan of Owari, present day Nagoya.
We hope you will enjoy the beauty of the ornamented instruments played for the performances of Uzagaku.
