スタンホペア

スタンホペア属（Stanhopea）は、約55種がメキシコからブラジルにかけての中南米の熱帯地域に分布するラン科の植物です。属名は、19世紀にロンドン薬用植物学会の会長を務めたスタンホープ伯爵（Philip Henry Stanhope）に由来します。下垂する花茎に、複雑な形をした唇弁をもつ花を数輪咲かせます。独特の強い香りを放つ花は、短期間で咲き終わります。

The genus Stanhopea (Orchidaceae) consists of approximately 55 species distributed throughout tropical regions of Central and South America, from Mexico to Brazil. The genus name honors Philip Henry Stanhope, Earl Stanhope, who served as president of the London Pharmaceutical Society in the 19th century.　The plants produce several flowers on drooping flower stalks, each with a uniquely complex-shaped lip. The flowers release a distinctive, strong fragrance, but their blooming period is brief.
