キンギンソウ

沖縄島以北では沢から離れた斜面や沢の源付近の湿地にも見られますが、八重山諸島では沢の流れの縁に限って生えるようになります。それに応じて、沖縄島のものは葉の幅が広く、八重山のものは流線形の葉を持っています（展示しているのは沖縄島のものです）。花は春に茎の頂上に穂をつくって咲き、小さくて最初白、後で黄色く変わるので金銀草の名があります。
North of Okinawa Island, it can also be found on slopes away from streams and in wetlands near the headwaters of streams. In the Yaeyama Islands, however, it appears to be restricted to the margins of flowing streams. Correspondingly, plants on Okinawa Island have broader leaves, whereas those in the Yaeyama Islands have streamlined leaves. (The specimen on display is from Okinawa Island.)
The plant flowers in spring, producing a spike at the tip of the stem. The flowers are small, initially white but turning yellow later, which gives rise to the Japanese name Kinginsō, meaning “gold-and-silver plant.”
