Farmer's house in Ryukyuan Kingdom Era
This building was built assumed a farmer's house in the kingdom era, and the it consists of two parts ; a main building and a kitchen. The house was built in the [Anaya] style. The pillars around the outside are made of polished miscellaneous logs with the floorboards in a low position, and the roof is thatched and made of small logs.
In Okinawa during the Kingdom era, from 1737 to 1889, the size of mansions and houses was restricted by status by the "Restriction Ordinance on Sites". In rural areas, the area of the mansion was 81 tsubo (265 m2), and the houses were limited to a main house of 7.2 m x 5.4 m and a kitchen of 5.4 m x 3.6 m. There were also restrictions on the use of building materials, and the use of some timber and tile-roofing was prohibited.
The finances of the Shuri royal government were based on the annual tribute and labor paid by the farmers, so the farmers were strictly managed. However, in the 18th century, the rural areas were exhausted by repeated disasters and famines, and the devastation of the rural areas became so serious that it affected the finances of the royal government.
