Shurijo Castle has been an important cultural heritage which symbolizes history and culture of Okinawa. However, much of the cultural properties were reduced to ash in the last World War and those that survived the war have been scattered within the country and overseas.
For many, many years, it has been the earnest wish of the Okinawan people to restore Shurijo Castle which functioned as the royal government of the Ryukyu Kingdom for approximately 450 years.
In commemoration of the 20th anniversary since Okinawa’s reversion to Japan, the Shurijo Seiden was restored for the first time in 47 years in November 1992, with national and prefectural support as well as from all relevant parties, and fully opened in February 2019.
On the other hand, about the arts and crafts, it is necessary to engage in the collection of cultural properties at a national level to restore and preserve the cultural properties related to Shurijo Castle that have been dispersed nationally and internationally. With the cooperation of the prefectural government, municipalities, and various organizations, and many individuals, the Shurijo Castle Fund was established within Okinawa Churashima Foundation, which has been continuously managing Cultural Propeties Collection Project.
Due to the fire on October 31st 2019, Shurijo Castle was burned to the ground, and more than 400 precious arts and crafts are estimated to be lost.
In the mood of re-construction of Shurijo Castle, we sincerely hope to have your understanding and ask for your generous support in our Shurijo Castle Fund in order to collect, restore, and preserve precious cultural properties that were passed down to us from our forefathers, and re-exhibit in Shurijo Castle once again.
The cultural properties are collected through a project funded by the Shurijo Castle Fund as follows.
