Shoin and Sasunoma Garden

The garden is an integral aspect that connects the Shoin and Sasunoma, and is the only full-scale garden within the castle grounds. The invited Sapposhi, or the Chinese investiture envoys wrote poetry that told of the beauty of the garden. A verse from one of the poems can be loosely translated as, “The pine and cycad palms are planted alternately between the strangely shaped rocks.”

The only known garden constructed within a Gusuku, a castle or fortress, in Okinawa Prefecture, is at Shurijo Castle. The garden was skillfully constructed using Ryukyu limestone.
