Okushoin Garden

Okushoin Garden

This is the Okushoin Garden, connected to the Okushoin where the king came to relax in between his royal duties. It is presumed that the garden was created between the 17th and 18th centuries, around the same time the building was constructed. From paintings, old photographs and other records, we know that the scale of the garden was small, and it was created on a slope which gave an advantageous viewpoint, and garden stones are distributed with great taste and skill. The Shoin and Sasunoma Garden was more for outward presentation, but the Okushoin Garden was more of a private garden.

Stalactite was uncovered in an excavation survey, which are believed to have been the feature point of the garden. Using mainly the uncovered stalactite (with partial repairs done on the broken parts) and also with rocks uncovered within the grounds, the garden was restored based on old photographs, paintings, pictures and other records.
