Private house with red tile roof after the Meiji period
In 1889 (Meiji 22), the restrictions on mansions and houses that were enforced during the Ryukyu Kingdom era were abolished. As a result, the previously restricted red roof tiles came to be used in private houses in Okinawa.
This private house is a one-building type with rooms (that was previously included in the main house) and a kitchen with one roof, and there is no veranda, and the rain edge [Amahaji] is used facing the east and south. [Amahaji] is one of the characteristics of Okinawa’s private houses, and the long eaves supported by pillars, prevents strong direct sunlight and storms from entering the room.
Behind the kitchen, on the northwest side of the main building, there is a pigsty [Furu]. When you relieve yourself inside the stone fence in front of a pigsty, your excreta is carried through a rectangular hole and becomes food for pigs.
