Kami-Asagi (Worship House)

Ritual place where the God of Utaki is entertained

Kami-Asagi is the ritual place where the guardian deity of the village is entertained. It's located near Utaki that protects the village. Since only female servant of god such as Noro are allowed to enter Utaki, Kami-Asagi is the place where people can gather and participate in rituals. It is used as a place for the servant to worship at Utaki, sing a song for the God, and have sacred sake.
The characteristic of Kami-Asagi is the thatched-roof hut with the hipped roof, and the eaves are so low that you must bend down to enter Kami-Asagi. The stone pillars are simply fixed into the ground, which is called [Anaya]-style. The roof is made in the way of “Sasu”-structure.
Though rituals are still held in Kami-Asagi, most of the buildings built after the war have tiled roofs and concrete structures.

“Sasu”-structure is a structure in which two materials leaning against an inverted V shape are supported by materials hung in the horizontal direction. In Okinawa, these two materials are called [Rin]. In the hut assembly, by crossing and tying this [Rin] at the ridge poles on the top, a large inner room was secured in the hut.
