- “Za” in daily life
The back rooms are primarily for women and children and are called Ichiban-uraza, Niban-uraza, and Sanban-uraza. Before the war, children in Okinawa would make toys using nearby natural materials.
May 4th [Yukkanuhi] in the lunar calendar is the date of Hari, a day to pray for bountiful fishing. For children, it is also a special day because parents give them some toys. Traditional Ryukyu toys such as papier-mâché and kites were bought for the children as good-luck talismans.
