Raised Okinawan Granaries

Three types of granaries: Raised granary, Raised floor style granary, and Ground granary

There are three types of granaries; raised granary that stores grains, raised floor style granary found in Haterumajima Is., and ground granary that has changed from the raised floor style granary.
Raised granaries have been devised to protect grains from moisture and mice, by raising the floor height to 1.5 to 2.0 m to improve ventilation and fitting a rat guard board on the top of the pillar. The number of circular pillars is 4, 6, and 9. The number increases depending on the size of the building, and the roof is made of thatch or bamboo. The wall is a bamboo net (Chinibu wall). The wall is a bamboo net (Chinibu wall) and is characterized by an inclination of 45°to 60 °outward.

The models of raised granaries exhibited here are the existing nine-pillar granaries at Gabusoka, Nago City and the six-pillar granaries, which once existed in Kiyoka, Ogami Village, and are Okinawa-style raised floor style granaries distributed in the south of Yoronjima Is.. The models of raised granaries once existed on Haterumajima Is., and has a central pillar structure with no slopes on the walls, giving it an appearance similar to a residence.
