Elevated granary of Amami
A group of these elevated granaries is called “Burigura”.
The Amami-style elevated granary is seen on the Amami Islands other than Yoron Island and on the Tokara Islands. Compared to the Okinawan style, the slope of the roof is steep, the inclination of the wall is nearly horizontal, the pillar is thick, and its plane surface is almost square. Although the elevated granary was located on the outskirts of the village or near the fields and was shared among the village people. Later, it was owned privately and built within one’s premises. There is a Burigura remaining in Yamato Village of Amami Ohshima Island which looks just the same as that from long ago.
